From the frequent flyer to the first-time traveler, knowing the security lines at San Francisco International Airport can make all the difference between a relaxed boarding and a mad dash to the gate. This guide explains it all, from the typical wait times throughout the day to the quickest programs to avoid the line.

An Overview of San Francisco International Airport Security Wait Times

San Francisco International Airport (SFO) is the main international airport for the Bay Area and is one of the busiest airports in the West. The airport has six major security checkpoints throughout the four passenger terminals, including the International Terminal (A and G sides) as well as Terminal 1 (Harvey Milk), Terminal 2, and Terminal 3, all with standard lanes, TSA PreCheck lanes, and CLEAR lanes.

SFO’s security is provided by a private firm, Covenant Aviation Security, contracting with the Transportation Security Administration (TSA). It is a public-private solution that is found nowhere else in the United States and typically helps to facilitate passenger movements. Based on the available data, SFO is one of the more efficient major California airports in terms of security throughput.

It is permissible for passengers to board from any terminal with any checkpoint provided that they have a same-day boarding pass. Once security, travelers may walk to any gate on the airside of Terminal 1, 2, or 3 or take advantage of the free AirTrain to the International Terminal.

If you are travelling during peak times in the mornings and/or afternoons, you can expect to spend 20-30 minutes during the 6-9 AM and 3-6 PM hours. Waits may be as long as 40-50 minutes during big holiday periods like Thanksgiving, Christmas, or Spring Break. The slowest periods are normally between 4 AM and 7 AM, with standard lanes moving through in less than 15 minutes.

Among the other facts to be noted, the banks during the afternoon of Friday and Sunday are the busiest for Southwest flights at Terminal 1. If there are several long-haul flights leaving at one time, then longer queues can be seen at the International Terminal.

Expedited Security Programs

SFO has three programs available to assist frequent travelers get through security much more quickly than normal, which are both government-backed and private.

TSA PreCheck

TSA PreCheck members go through a separate screening area and are provided with dedicated lanes to keep their shoes, belt, and light jacket on, and do not have to remove laptops or liquids from bags for pre-flight screening. At SFO, PreCheck passengers typically pass through the PreCheck lane in less than 10 minutes at most times, with some as quickly as 5 minutes during off-peak hours. Admission is open at the International Terminal (G-side, close to BART Station), and an interview is needed and must be conducted in person. Walk-ins welcome, but appointments will be given priority.

CLEAR+

By verifying your identity via biometric kiosks, CLEAR eliminates the need to queue and check documentation and immediately moves you to physical screening. There are seven CLEAR+ lanes at SFO: one in each terminal. CLEAR works in conjunction with TSA PreCheck to deliver the fastest overall security process at SFO.

Please note: CLEAR lane at Terminal 3, Checkpoint F is closed for construction work.

The CLEAR eGates (New — Terminal 1)

SFO’s latest eGate installation is at Terminal 1, Harvey Milk, and is the first in California.SFO’s newest eGate placement is at Terminal 1, Harvey Milk; it is the first in California. These fully automated, biometric gates will complete the identity verification process without any staff involvement, which further speeds the process for CLEAR+ members. This is the state-of-the-art airport security throughput technology.

Global Entry

Global Entry is a U.S. Customs and Border Protection program mainly to facilitate customs clearance when arriving on foreign soil. TSA PreCheck benefits are also included in Global Entry membership for domestic departures. At SFO’s International Terminal, the average time for customs is 10-25 minutes, but it can be up to 30-40 minutes if several international flights land at the same time.

REAL ID Requirement

The REAL ID Requirement will go into effect on May 7, 2025. As of May 7, 2025, all passengers 18 years and older will be required to use a driver’s license or other acceptable form of identification (such as a U.S. passport) to pass through SFO security. IDs from the state, which are not REAL ID-compliant, are no longer accepted. Look for a gold or black star on your ID to see if it is REAL ID compliant.

Best Tips To Beat The Lines

With planning, even without an expedited program membership, your time in the secure queue could be significantly shortened.

Arrive Early

SFO suggests arriving at least 2 hours ahead of a domestic flight and 3 hours prior to an international flight to provide ample time for security and boarding.

Check the MyTSA App

The official MyTSA app gives an estimate of wait times at certain checkpoints. Be sure to verify before departing for the airport in order to select the least busy entry point.

Take BART

BART is the only transit option for direct service to SFO’s International Terminal; AirTrain is free of charge and connects with all other terminals in the SFO area, and it may be faster than driving during rush hour.

Pack Smart

Keep liquids away from being overfilled, and keep electronics in an easy-to-reach location. The ready-made bags will save you some of the screening time and will help to keep lines moving for everyone.

Check Your ID

Starting in May 2025, only REAL ID-compliant documents or passports will be accepted at SFO. Remember to check your ID well in advance of travel so you don’t run into any problems at the last minute.

Fly Early Or Midday

The time of 4-7 AM is when the security lines are the shortest of the day. The midday flights (9 AM – 3 PM) also experience much lighter ridership than morning or afternoon peak times.
